Juneteenth Series: Day 1 Health & Wellness
In support of the Black Lives Matter movement I wanted to use this platform to shed light on this day in history as well as to amplify Black businesses across all lifestyle categories over the next 7 days (and many more here on out). But, let’s keep it real. Growing up I had no clue about the significance of today at all. Even though I did go to a Spanish immersion Elementary school that was extremely multi-cultural (we celebrated Lunar New Year) yet sadly no word at all about Juneteenth.
What is Juneteenth you ask? In short it’s the oldest celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
Juneteenth today, celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures.
